Your Guide to IONM

American Society of Neurophysiological Monitoring: Patients - ASNM

What is IONM?

During certain surgeries, surgeons may be working very close to delicate nerves, which places those nerves at risk. Intraoperative Neurophysiological Monitoring (IONM) helps the surgical team evaluate the condition of the nervous system during the procedure.

If your surgeon chooses to use IOM with NeuroSound, Inc., a licensed neurophysiologist will monitor your nervous system in real time. Having a neurophysiologist present helps the team quickly recognize and respond to changes, supporting safer surgical outcomes.

What to Expect During Surgery?

Before surgery, your surgeon will review your health history, current medications, and any allergies. On the day of your procedure, you will be admitted to the hospital and prepared for surgery. This may include reviewing the anesthesia plan, surgical steps, and your postoperative care.

If NIOM is part of your procedure, electrodes will be placed on specific areas of your body before surgery begins. These electrodes record electrical activity from your brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves. The signals are then monitored using specialized equipment, allowing the neurophysiologist to provide real-time feedback to your surgical team on how your nervous system may be affected during surgery.

Billing for IONM

The hospital or surgery center contracts with NeuroSound, Inc. to provide IONM services. Generally, the facility covers the cost of services provided by the NeuroSound, Inc. neurophysiologists. However, the physician overseeing your monitoring may submit a separate bill to your insurance company. You may be responsible for any co-pay, co-insurance, or deductible. Please note that the monitoring physician may be out of network.

What Should I Do When I Receive an Explanation of Benefits (EOB) From My Insurance Company?

No action is required. Please note that an EOB is not a bill from NeuroSound, Inc.

What Should I Do if I Receive a Check From My Insurance Company?

In some cases (commonly with Blue Cross), insurance payments are sent directly to the patient. If this happens, please forward the payment and a copy of the EOB to our office as soon as possible. This ensures your account is updated, and the payment is applied properly.

If the check is made out to you, either:

· Endorse it by signing the back and writing the physician group name (as shown on the EOB) below your signature, then mail it to us, OR

· Deposit the check and send us a new check in the same amount, along with a copy of your EOB.
